You need to be on your best behaviour. You need to live in the country for not less than six years. And, you need to know some things about the country you'll want to have as your second home. But before you start the hassle of processing that citizenship application of yours, ask around or be sure enough that you're not already a Canadian citizen. Some inherited the said status unknowingly, so better ask your parents or family just to be sure. 1. Be of legal age or at least 18 years old You’ll have a long way to go if you are not yet a legal adult. The definition of permanent residence as per the country's government is living in Canada for at least two years in a five-year period. But if you failed to spend that required time within its borders, there's a possibility that you'll lose your permanent residence status. 4. Have a permanent residence in Canada. The applicants can go through Quebec that has special immigration requirements or asks for help from a family member who resides in Canada. They can go down a special entrepreneur route. Or, lastly, apply through the province of their choice. Once you become a permanent resident in Canada, you can study, work, travel, and be entitled to healthcare coverage anywhere in the country.
